Akiko Toriumi

painter artist

Akio Toriumi’s work seeks to destroy this ready-made image that we have in our eyes and that we call “reality” when we believe we see the world. From the opacity of the material emerges a line, a sign. Neutral and heartbreaking, insistent and unattached. In Akiko Toriumi’s work, there is no vision except blocked by something that makes a screen, opposes the gaze, a primary ontological opacity. The presence of black, gaping like a black hole. Seeing at Akiko Toriumi is especially not seeing. The crossing of appearances often comes up against the frontality of the parietal matter.
